Haiti Rice Update April 23
FEWS came out with another food price update on Haiti.
This analysis is just on Rice, no detail on other food stuffs.
Summary
http://reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/db900sid/RMOI-84S2BN?OpenDocument&rc=2
Rice Food Aid has not had a major impact on the price of rice in Haiti.
Rice is one of the main urban staple foods in Haiti, although domestic production is limited. In recent years, commercial imports have met up to 80 percent of national demand, with the remaining 20 percent coming from domestic production.

Big news last few days.
-
Donor's Conference Pledges are getting implemented at perhaps the rate of one a week. http://www.refondation.ht/index.jsp?sid=1&id=190&pid=126
-
Malaria is now officially recognized as a major problem in Haiti.
-
Even with the increased police protection, rape is still epidemic in the camps.
-
The flooding that I reported as coming west from Dominican Republic. It is now in Cuba.
-
Soufrière Hills volcano near Haiti is still doing its thing, not as newsworthy as the ash cloud from Iceland.
-
An Imat Med team member said: If other relief workers have Verizon cell phone carrier, call customer service (611) and tell them they served with a relief organization in Haiti. Verizon will waive the call charges while there. Call before April 30, 2009. I did it this morning, and I can verify that this is NOT a... myth!! They are actually taking the charges off of my bill :)

Argues that NGOs should be purchasing 100% of Haiti agricultural output, so as to stimulate that economy, instead of food aid undermining it, build it up to be able to feed Haiti, and maybe export some.

Many people have argued that food aid has made it impossible for Haiti agriculture to function, that Haiti has become dependent on food aid, and unable to get out of that reality.
Bill Clinton has acknowledged that under his administration, he pushed for policies that helped American farmers at the expense of Haitian.
Haitian President René Préval -- an agronomist by training -- has said he wants agricultural investment in his country prioritized over food aid.
One of the interest groups on Linked In, which has spread to other places I hang out, is the concept of how to fix the ecology, such as via Biochar. This morning I posted the following to my Facebook page:
Improving our planet is doable in Haiti.
1. Learn about solutions such as Biochar.
2. Promote them such as here
Learning about them is a very important first step.
I have been closely monitoring new stuff posted to RELIEF WEB and some relevant topics:
-
impact of food aid on food prices
-
what the quake did to Haiti agriculture
-
its dependence on humanitarian assistance
-
the quality of that aid
The overall picture is pretty bad.

I watched Food, Inc. -the movie last night. Michael Pollen's recent books on how distorted the entire food production system system has become (The Omnivore's Dilema) makes a good case for Permaculture. Does this permaculure (permanent agriculture - or sustainable food production) idea show up in any of your readings?
http://www.foodincmovie.com/ Makes the argument for rethinking all of the subsidies the US Gov't provides a few huge firms in the US overdependence on technical solutions, and perhaps globally
http://www.knowyourh2o.org/ Makes the argument for working out water shed demands by agriculture, residents, vendors by using bio-friendly social technologies rather than any financial-technology solutions.

World Bank, Donors Take Long-Term View on Food Security
http://reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/db900sid/EGUA-84RLZG?OpenDocument&rc=2
a new fund aimed at reducing global hunger and poverty by focusing on food security and agriculture.
The United States, Canada, Spain, the Republic of Korea and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will together provide about $900 million in support to the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP). The World Bank will serve as trustee and host of a coordination unit for the fund, and if requested, as a supervising entity.
The origins of the new fund stem from the G8-plus meeting in L'Aquila in July 2009, Italy, in which leaders pledged more than $20 billion to boost food security and agriculture.
Leaders at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh in September 2009 then called on the World Bank to "work with interested donors and organizations to develop a multilateral trust fund to scale up agricultural assistance to low income countries." The GAFSP will handle some of the funds originally pledged in L'Aquila.
